The journey of shedding weight may start out with a lot of excitement as you are motivated and inspired to get going, but that is not going to last forever. The newness wears off and the process becomes difficult. There will be times when you just aren't motivated at all and you will need something else to fall back on.
Your energy is going to run low. Life will get stressful and obstacles will be thrown in your way. You will have a million other things to do besides workout and those donuts are going to be tempting. When motivation wears away, there has to be something else to keep you moving forward.
So, what is it that you need? You need commitment and determination! Motivation is great, but there will be times when nothing but your honest commitment to yourself is going to keep just one foot on the right path. If you want to actually meet your goals and keep the weight off long term you will have to make that commitment right now and hold it in your head when those rough moments hit. This is you back up for when motivation escapes you.
The best way to make a lifestyle change and really stick with it is to set up daily routines that become natural habit. It's about recreating your life so you have a new purpose and new goals for each day of your life. Set up routines and your commitment will be much easier to stick with.
Engrained habit is the only thing that will stop you from veering off course and wrecking all the progress you have made in a short period of time. When obstacles are thrown in your path, unexpected stress drops on your shoulders, or you just feel down and out of the game, you will need routines to keep you steady.
If you have to, take it one habit at a time. As one thing becomes habit you can tackle something else until it all starts to come together as something you just naturally do with little to no thought.
For instance, you may start by just committing to workout an hour every evening right after work. You may have to turn down offers to go out and it will be hard, but if you are seriously committed it will become something you just do within a month or less. You can then focus on something else.
Permanent weight loss actually doesn't have much to do with one particular meal or one specific day. You will mess up sometimes, but what counts is stringing successes together over time. That is what brings the real change.
