About Adolescent Obesity
The majority of available literature has reported that children and adolescents are now less active than ever, and it is the modern lifestyle which is really most to blame for this, as people?s lifestyles in general have seen a reduction in both voluntary and incidental activities.
Also, certain segments of the adolescent and younger population are at even higher risk for obesity, due to documented differences in physical activity levels. As an example, boys are more active than girls in general, and children become less active as they grow into their teenage years. These simple facts tell us a lot about obesity in adolescents, and may provide us the answers we need to stop it.
Health problems associated with obesity
The list of health related issues caused by adolescent obesity is a large one, and all of the following diseases may result: Sleep apnea, breast cancer, colon cancer, gallbladder disease, diabetes, and heart disease and all of it's related conditions. Obesity can even lead to death in adolescents if it's not controlled.
Diabetes is commonly seen in obese teens, and since teens and younger kids are already at an increased risk level for diabetes than adults are, it's a very real threat. Not only that, but obesity can bring the risk level much higher for arthritis, infertility, and lower extremity venous stasis disease.
Additional complications
Obesity can cause problems , especially for adolescents and kids, that extend far beyond health issues as well. Social interaction can be severely impacted, school grades are often lower in obese kids, and the future is less bright for obese kids and adolescents. Poor self-esteem is common, and career possibilities tend to be less attractive for the obese than they are for their thin counterparts.
Obesity is very obviously a severe issue in our society today, and it's hurting our children and adolescents especially badly. Since we know what the problem is, it's our next step to face it head on and find solutions. If we can find a way to prevent childhood and adolescent obesity, we will save a great deal of health and other problems for the kids of today.
